Korean Studies Guest Lecture Series: An Excursion into 'Trot'

Event description
- Academic events
‘Trot (트로트),’ a popular Korean song genre, has been present for around 100 years since its formation as the first modern popular music. Recently, it has garnered great public attention again as a major genre. However, trot suffered criticism in the past from some who viewed it as a cultural remnant of the Japanese colonial era or dismissed it as outdated and of inferior quality in the realm of popular music. Through this lecture, let's explore how trot has been imbued with social and historical values.
This lecture will be given by Min Jung Son, professor in the music education department at the Korea National University of Education, Korea.
