Previously Titled: Perusall to Harmonize: Match a Teaching Problem to the Right Workflow

In this practical session, instructors will work through common teaching problems and learn how to match them with the right Harmonize workflow. We will compare Social Reading, Discussions, Peer Review, Individual Assignments, and Polls, focusing on the instructional choices that distinguish them.

We will pay particular attention to activities moving from Perusall or another annotation platform. Some activities, such as collaborative PDF annotation, transfer directly into Harmonize Social Reading. Others, including video annotation, image analysis, copyrighted readings, and activities that combine annotation with reflection or peer feedback, may require a different approach.

By the end of the session, participants will have a repeatable decision-making process and a plan for their first Harmonize activity.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

1. Identify the primary teaching problem an activity is intended to solve.
2. Distinguish between the instructional workflows supported by Harmonize’s major tools.
3. Choose between Social Reading and annotation inside a Discussion.
4. Select appropriate workflows for documents, images, videos, student work, and private activities.
5. Identify when a Perusall activity can be migrated directly and when it should be redesigned.
6. Draft a basic plan for one Harmonize activity they can use in their course.

Central Decision-Making Framework

Throughout the session, instructors return to five questions:

1. What are students working with?
   A shared reading, instructor-provided media, their own work, or a classmate’s work?
2. What should students do with it?
   Annotate, discuss, reflect, critique, present, practice, or submit?
3. Who should interact with whom?
   Individual student and instructor, small groups, the whole class, or assigned peers?
4. What should students produce?
   Individual annotations, replies, a complete post, a multimedia response, a review, or a private submission?
5. How should completion or quality be assessed?
   Annotation and reply counts, post and reply requirements, rubric criteria, peer ratings, instructor grading, or simple participation?

The goal is not to memorize every Harmonize feature. The goal is to identify the structure of the learning activity and select the workflow that supports it.
