We Don’t Have to Explain

Event description

  • Arts and entertainment
  • Free
  • Open to the public

“We Don’t Have to Explain” is an exhibition that questions the viewer’s dependence on written context and whether the artist should be required to give any. In this show, the works will not be accompanied by artist statements in the interest of encouraging the artists to share their work without the obligation to reveal more than they already have. This gives viewers additional space to interpret freely and connect their own experiences with the art. Additionally, we question if the absence of a formal statement minimizes the artists’ sentiment and viewers’ takeaways or strengthens the relationship between the two. Instead of the artist providing an explanation, we call on the viewer to contribute their interpretations, connections and personal narratives to the artwork presented.
