Write On Workshop: Informational Writing

Event description

  • Community service
  • Professional and career development

The Central Arizona Writing Writing Project in the Department of English at ASU is excited to offer three new writing workshops for teachers in all subject areas grades 6-12. In collaboration with UC Irvine’s Division of Continuing Education and the National Writing Project (NWP), this workshop series will draw on decades of research-based work and evidence-based practices of UC Irvine’s Pathway to Academic Success Project. These interactive professional development courses will enhance teachers’ repertoires in the teaching of reading and writing. These strategies are effective with all students, but our emphasis here is developing English learners’ abilities as academic writers.

Each course—Argumentative Writing, Narrative Writing and Informational Writing—guides teacher participants to teach explicitly the cognitive reading and writing strategies that propel English learners to grow as writers. Essential, is this focus, given that those in the process of simultaneously acquiring an additional language need to negotiate the nuances of academic language arts as well as master core subject matter.

We are recruiting 10 experienced teachers and teacher leaders of grades 6-12 to participate in each of the writing courses in this training series. These professional development offerings are entirely online. They consist of both asynchronous hours and synchronous hours. Each course is 20 hours in length over two weeks.
