Indonesian democratization and political opening; a United Nations-sponsored referendum; utter destruction in the referendum\u2019s aftermath; two-and-a-half years of United Nations supervision; and on May 20, 2002, independence. Then a graduate student at ASU, Chris Lundry made seven trips to Timor-Leste throughout this period and worked as an United Nations-accredited observer during the Aug\u003C\/span\u003E.\u003Cspan\u003E 30, 1999 referendum. He brought his camera on each trip.
