These needs may be related to military service, such as exposure to combat, trauma, repeated deployments, military sexual trauma, injuries, or difficulty transitioning to civilian life, or they may arise independently of service. Veterans deserve care from providers who understand the distinct culture, experiences, and needs of service members and Veterans from all branches of the military and all eras.\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cspan\u003EThis continuing education program provides social workers with the following:\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Col class=\u0022uds-list\u0022\u003E\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAn overview of the prevalence of mental health needs among Veterans across different demographic and service-related groups.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EFactors that may make Veterans\u2019 experiences unique, including military identity, unit cohesion, duty-related values, exposure to trauma, reintegration into civilian life, and concerns about stigma or the potential consequences of seeking care.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003ECultural considerations for treating Veterans, including the importance of asking about military history, understanding service-related language and experiences, recognizing strengths and resilience, and creating a therapeutic environment that is respectful, collaborative, and trauma-informed.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003E\u0026nbsp;A review of treatment options commonly provided to Veterans, including evidence-based psychotherapies, medication management, peer support, care coordination, and services addressing substance use, housing, employment, family relationships, and physical health.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003E\u0026nbsp;Discussion of treatment outcomes, barriers to engagement, and strategies that can support recovery, safety, continuity of care, and long-term well-being.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ol\u003E\u003Chr class=\u0022copy-divider\u0022\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EAbout \u003C\/strong\u003E\u003Cspan\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EDanielle DeMailo, LCSW\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cspan\u003EDanielle DeMailo, LCSW, is a 2009 Alumni of ASU School of Social Work, Tucson Campus, former faculty associate (2012-2015), and current member of ASU School of Social Work\u0027s Tucson Community Advisory Board (CAB). Ms. DeMailo is currently the Outpatient Mental Health Section Chief at the Southern AZ VA HealthCare System (SAVAHCS), overseeing the program coordinators and managers of programs within the continuum of mental health care, to include specialty programs for substance use disorders, PTSD, military sexual trauma, family therapy, and programs for serious mental illness. Ms. DeMailo has worked at the SAVAHCS since 2009, starting her VA career in the intensive in-home mental health program before transitioning to the mental health clinic to become a psychotherapist and team lead. Ms. DeMailo followed her calling in management, starting as a supervisor in the homeless program, then becoming a program manager for the Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Program, before landing her current position in 2023. Ms. DeMailo worked with children and families in the community prior to getting her masters. She was inspired to work at the VA after learning about the experiences her father, uncle and cousins experienced in the Army, and wanting to connect her passion for helping individuals with trauma to the trauma and high incidence of PTSD among Veterans.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Chr class=\u0022copy-divider\u0022\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EASU Tucson SSW Students:\u003C\/strong\u003E Seating is limited to 10 students.
