Political polarization is making it increasingly hard to see the good in people who aren\u2019t on \u201cthe same side\u201d (whatever side that is). Tackling this head on, our focus this week will be on cultivating civic virtues \u2014 such as openmindedness, humility and empathy \u2014 skills that we need to get through polarizing times.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ESome guiding questions that we will be engaging:\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cul class=\u0022uds-list\u0022\u003E\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cp\u003EWhat are civic virtues? You will get to meet a handful of ASU professors as they come in to give guest lectures. We will be drawing from Ethics, Aesthetics, Political Philosophy, and Philosophy of Wellbeing. In the meantime, you\u2019re hanging out with your peers that want to look at life a little more carefully. You are part of an intellectual community. The creative writing camps, for example, explore writing through poems, autobiographical sketches, comics, short stories, arguments, nature\/science, craft secrets, and daily writing workshops. Fueling this expansion was an explosion in the global bond market, at the hub of which stood one family\u2014the Rothschilds, arguably the wealthiest banking family in history. In the early 1870s, the bubble burst. Stock markets from Vienna to New York crashed, and dozens of railroads and many governments defaulted. Financial officials responded by blundering into a precipitous remaking of the global currency system\u2014exacerbating the ensuing economic collapse and setting the stage for decades of a punitive deflation that sparked waves of anti-globalist populism.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EIn his new book,\u0026nbsp;1873: The Rothschilds, the First Great Depression, and the Making of the Modern World, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Liaquat Ahamed examines this enthralling history and how the crisis of 1873 was, among other things, a death blow to Reconstruction in the United States and the proximate cause of the Ottoman Empire\u2019s slow death spiral. He also explores how though the Rothschilds had presciently kept a low profile during the bubble, when the deluge came, they were viciously scapegoated as part of a wider hatred directed at \u201cJewish finance,\u201d a strain of antisemitism that would come to full evil flower during the twentieth century. YAWP sessions engage young writers in crafting a variety of forms based on the theme and focus of the camp. The creative writing camps, for example, explore writing through poems, autobiographical sketches, comics, short stories, arguments, nature\/science, craft secrets, and daily writing workshops. By the end of camp, writers will be able to share a final piece of writing for publication in the annual camp anthology.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EWhat grade levels do we serve?\u003C\/strong\u003E\u0026nbsp; Grades 2-12\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EWho are the writing instructors?\u003C\/strong\u003E In addition to being certified to teach in the state of Arizona, our writing instructors are trained Central Arizona Writing Project Teacher Consultants who have completed CAWP\u2019s Invitational Summer Institute or training from the National Writing Project in teaching composition. As committed writers and educators, they continually implement writing in their personal and professional lives.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ECost\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003Cspan\u003E: Tuition for each YAWP two-week in-person session is $425 plus a $25 book fee for a total of $450.
