I\u0027ll illustrate how ordinary interpersonal understanding and relationships rely crucially on the skill of distinguishing \u0022signal\u0022 from \u0022noise\u0022.\u0026nbsp; Then I\u0027ll argue that this distinction can have the kind of interpersonal significance that it does only if it reflects something deep about us - about what reflects us as people, rather than merely as things.\u0026nbsp; Finally, I\u0027ll show how the method of illusions is leveraged in perceptual science not only to identify the mechanics of perceptual processing, but also to identify the objects of perceptual representation, and use the same method to narrow the range of plausible philosophical accounts of the nature of persons.\u0026nbsp; My ongoing project works to disentangle civility from the moral ideals nearest to it. I distinguish a merely conversational (and I think mistakenly emphasized) sense of civility, understood as constraints on manner and mode, from a fuller sense involving reciprocal acknowledgment of one\u0027s fellow citizens\u0027 standing. Drawing on Stephen Darwall\u0027s distinction between recognition and appraisal respect, I argue that civility does not require appraisal respect: it demands no positive evaluation of others\u0027 beliefs, projects, or characters. What it does express is recognition respect, the acknowledgment of others as agents whose standing constrains how we may treat them. The distinction has practical stakes, and it locates forfeiture precisely. Those who systematically deny others\u0027 equal standing may forfeit the conversational benefit of the doubt owed among cooperating citizens without thereby forfeiting recognition respect. In his administrative role, he directs the Prindle Institute\u2019s digital and educational strategy and leads key national engagement initiatives and partnerships. In his faculty role, he teaches innovative and service-driven courses in ethics and political philosophy for DePauw undergraduates.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003ERichardson\u2019s research interests lie at the intersections of political philosophy and the philosophy of education, and focus on moral and civic education, the development of key democratic and intellectual virtues, and the value (both theoretical and practical) of civility and other nearby dispositions. Richardson serves on the Board of Directors of the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics (APPE) and as chair of the American Philosophical Association\u0027s Committee on Pre-College Philosophy. He also sits on the APPE Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl Council and Steering Committee as well as the National High School Ethics Bowl Advisory Board.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003EIn his local community, he serves on the board of directors at Indy Pride.
