Along with her awards, Cauley has been featured on various television and print publications including PBS, NPR, JAVA Magazine (cover), Forbes and was named one of Phoenix Magazine’s “Great 48: 48 Most Influential people in the state of Arizona” in 2019.

Cauley recently spent three years in Berlin, Germany to complete an artist residency as well as launch her international career. As a result, this often leads to hyper independence and self sufficiency in children within our communities. Her work is heavily influenced by Black American hood culture with a feminist undertone and an overall focus of Black empowerment. Visually, she combines the dynamism of Black American culture with powerful punches of vibrant color and deep, emotionally driven messages. Cauley attended Mesa Community College where she studied Fine Art with an emphasis in painting.

Debra Goley has been exploring the use of fiber in two dimensions, manipulating designs with small cuts and broken threads, exposing subsequent layers to create more surprise dimensions. This technique involves color analysis, sketching a design, layering fabric and auditioning compositional poses. The artistic result is revealed much like a complex mystery, rendering the viewer a thought-provoking expression.

About artist Debra Goley

Art is Debra’s language, and it speaks of how she is innately wired. As an award-winning international and inspirational artist, beginning with a career as an architect, and now a full-time artist, art instructor and designer. The last decade has seen her working with fiber as an exciting extension of her portfolio, adding depth to her work after her mother left her with a plethora of fabric and a machine to draw with her needle. With a brush and a pencil in hand, Debra begins her designs by sketching to scale and allowing the form to follow concept. Her technique of piecing color value together and cutting through the multiple layers offers elements of mystery and intrigue. As a multimedia artist, Debra’s work and teaching style clearly reflect her life’s work, which is a continued exploration that has its roots in a life lived overseas and the experience of a multicultural community. Her subject matter ranges from natural landscapes, travel and the close-up snapshots of objects and time captured in a sketch journal. With each new project, her journey begins with research and analysis of a sketch subject, which takes her design from concept to an abstract expression of that subject. Debra is a resident of Goodyear, AZ, and enjoys sketching and morning hikes to view the sunrise. Back in the studio, she is found conjuring and cutting up new works yearning be freed from the design table and shared with viewers.
