And, critically, how could these new approaches actually work in the real world?\u003Cbr\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv class=\u0022x_elementToProof\u0022\u003EThe goal is to bring together people who see different pieces of the water system and think together about what comes next\u2014to challenge assumptions, connect ideas across disciplines and sectors, and develop new mechanisms for turning ambitious ideas into practice.\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv class=\u0022x_elementToProof\u0022\u003E\u003Cbr\u003EOur first discussion, on \u003Cstrong\u003EOctober 9\u003C\/strong\u003E, will focus on Theme 2: Water Security for Sustainable Development, with the\u003Cstrong\u003E Colorado River Basin as our starting point\u003C\/strong\u003E. In this talk, Armin Grunwald confronts one of the defining puzzles of our era: technological progress generates unintended consequences that demand still more innovation. This unending spiral has shaped the Anthropocene so far. Grunwald argues for a responsible path between blind faith that new technology will fix what old technology broke, and nostalgic longing for a pre-industrial world. He directs the Institute for Technology Assessment and Systems Analysis (ITAS) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and, since 2002, has headed the Office of Technology Assessment at the German Bundestag (TAB). Since 2007 he has held the Chair of Philosophy and Ethics of Technology at KIT. Trained originally in physics, he later turned to philosophy, earning his habilitation at the University of Marburg. His research interests involve physical surface and subsurface hydrology, floods, climate science and hydrologic impacts, plant water relations and ecohydraulics. Current research projects focus on Amazon rainforest ecohydrology; climate change and hydrometeorological impacts on reindeer herding in the Arctic; and the development of novel, hybrid first-principles \/ machine-learning frameworks for fast, real-time assessment of flooding impacts for decision-making.
