Differences of opinion (especially those having to do with politics) start fights between family members, friends and neighbors. Political polarization is making it increasingly hard to see the good in people who aren\u2019t on \u201cthe same side\u201d (whatever side that is). Tackling this head on, our focus this week will be on cultivating civic virtues \u2014 such as openmindedness, humility and empathy \u2014 skills that we need to get through polarizing times.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ESome guiding questions that we will be engaging:\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cul class=\u0022uds-list\u0022\u003E\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cp\u003EWhat are civic virtues? Why do we want them?\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EIs it always important to be right?\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EHow can we avoid echo chambers?\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EWhat values hold up our community? Our country?\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EHow can we develop compassion, and work with people who disagree with us?\u0026nbsp;\u003Cbr\u003E\u003Cspan\u003E\u0026nbsp; \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\u003Cp\u003EFor one week, you are a college student, working with ASU\u2019s graduate students, to investigate these questions \u2014 coming to campus in the morning and leaving in the evening. You will get to meet a handful of ASU professors as they come in to give guest lectures. We will be drawing from Ethics, Aesthetics, Political Philosophy, and Philosophy of Wellbeing. In the meantime, you\u2019re hanging out with your peers that want to look at life a little more carefully. You are part of an intellectual community.
