Understanding how vegetation responds to water stress is critical for better prediction.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThis talk presents work using satellite observations and explainable machine learning to disentangle how atmospheric water demand and soil water supply regulate vegetation, revealing a widespread shift toward stronger atmospheric influence. It also discusses the development of a plant hydraulics scheme that represents plant water transport, storage and hydraulic strategies, improving simulations of ecosystem water and carbon responses under water-stressed conditions.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EFinally, I briefly introduce emerging generative AI approaches for integrating land observations, such as soil moisture, into Earth system models. Overall, this talk highlights how observations, process-based modeling and emerging AI can work together to better understand ecosystem water stress and advance Earth system prediction in a thirstier atmosphere.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ESpeaker Bio: \u003C\/strong\u003ELingcheng Li\u2019s research focuses on terrestrial ecohydrology and Earth system science, particularly ecosystem responses to extreme events, water and carbon dynamics, and land\u2013atmosphere interactions.
