VOCs are hypothesized to contribute to a poorly defined illness usually called \u2018sick building syndrome\u2019.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EIn this lecture, National Academy of Sciences member Joan Bennett will discuss how the Bennett laboratory has focused on the VOCs produced by molds that contaminate indoor environments and pioneered the use of genetic models for testing the bioactivity of these compounds. Mixtures of VOCs emitted from living fungal cultures, and chemical standards of individual VOCs, are toxic in a Drosophila melanogaster bioassay. Fungal volatiles serve as molecular signals that can act at a distance and trigger negative metabolic processes and deserve greater attention in the context of the health of people living in enclosed indoor spaces such as those encountered on nuclear submarines and the International Space Station where mold contamination is often present.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EJoan Bennett is the Ida A. Richardson Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Tulane University. The Bennett lab has pioneered the use of genetic model systems such as Arabidopsis, Drosophila and Saccharomyces to study the physiological impact of fungal VOCs. Prior to returning to Tulane in 2025, Bennett served as Associate Vice President for the Office for the Promotion of Women in Science, Engineering and Mathematics at Rutgers from 2006\u20132014 and is currently a professor emerita of the Rutgers Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology. She is a past Editor-in-Chief of Mycologia; past Vice President of the British Mycological Society and the International Union of Microbiological Societies; as well as past President of the American Society for Microbiology and the Society for Industrial Microbiology \u0026amp; Biotechnology. Understanding how vegetation responds to water stress is critical for better prediction.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThis talk presents work using satellite observations and explainable machine learning to disentangle how atmospheric water demand and soil water supply regulate vegetation, revealing a widespread shift toward stronger atmospheric influence. It also discusses the development of a plant hydraulics scheme that represents plant water transport, storage and hydraulic strategies, improving simulations of ecosystem water and carbon responses under water-stressed conditions.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EFinally, I briefly introduce emerging generative AI approaches for integrating land observations, such as soil moisture, into Earth system models. Alley Jr. Professor at the Santa Fe Institute, as our featured speaker.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EToday\u2019s AI systems are able to solve thorny problems in mathematics, \u003Cspan\u003Ecomputing, and many areas of science. At the same time, they are prone to hallucination, unhumanlike errors, intractable biases and exhibit a confounding \u201cjaggedness\u201d in their intelligence.\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EIn this talk,\u003Cspan\u003E Mitchell will describe how today\u2019s state-of-the-art AI systems evolved from the earliest days of the field, how we can characterize their capabilities and trustworthiness and what certainties and uncertainties AI future holds.\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EMelanie Mitchell\u2019s research is at the intersection between artificial \u003Cspan\u003Eintelligence, cognitive science, and complex systems. Since 2022, SI has undertaken a comprehensive process of examining its carbon emissions, energy use, travel, transportation, waste, materials and other aspects of institutional practice, with the goal of moving beyond isolated \u201cgreen\u201d initiatives toward a broader transformation of how an arts organization operates. Hessler will reflect on how this process has informed SI\u2019s curatorial thinking, including \u201c\u003Cspan\u003ESpora,\u201d an open-ended initiative that invited artists to intervene in the institution\u2019s architecture, infrastructures and working processes, and \u201cEnergies,\u201d an East Village-wide exhibition that addressed ecological affordances and effects, social formations and political arrangements attached to energy past and present. Rather than treating sustainability as a fixed set of solutions, SI approaches climate action as a collaborative process of learning, experimentation and institutional change. This includes rethinking exhibition materials and production, transportation and shipping, travel, reuse, partnerships and relationships with local communities. Contracted by the Texas Department of Transportation, Scott was a member of a small group of historians who chronicled the history of an excavated, post-emancipation era, African American cemetery (Freedman\u2019s Cemetery) and the surrounding community in Dallas, Texas. The team used the findings to create an expansive report, elementary school curriculum, and a museum exhibit. Scott also chronicled the history of the first African American public housing project in Dallas for the Dallas Housing Authority. While at Hood College, Scott established a program that taught students how to process the archival collections held by African American Resources, Cultural Heritage Society of Frederick County (AARCH). In this conversation, LACMA curators Leah Lehmbeck, Bobbye Tigerman and Clarissa Esguerra will discuss the curatorial vision behind the reinstallation, examining how the museum has reconsidered traditional narratives through new thematic, cross-cultural and interdisciplinary frameworks. They will explore the intellectual and practical challenges of reinstalling a global collection within a new architectural context, including decisions around object selection, interpretive strategies, audience engagement and accessibility. Esguerra is Curator of Costume and Textiles at LACMA where she has overseen, advised and published on numerous fashion and textile installations including \u201cFashioning Fashion: European Dress in Detail\u201d (2010); co-curator of \u201cLee Alexander McQueen: Mind, Mythos, Muse\u201d (2022); \u201cTimeless: J. In 2019, she curated \u201cPower of Pattern: Central Asian Ikats\u201d and in 2016 co-curated \u201cReigning Men: Fashion in Menswear\u201d; both exhibitions were awarded the Richard Martin Exhibition Award by the Costume Society of America.
