Alley Jr. Professor at the Santa Fe Institute, as our featured speaker.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EToday\u2019s AI systems are able to solve thorny problems in mathematics, \u003Cspan\u003Ecomputing, and many areas of science. At the same time, they are prone to hallucination, unhumanlike errors, intractable biases and exhibit a confounding \u201cjaggedness\u201d in their intelligence.\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EIn this talk,\u003Cspan\u003E Mitchell will describe how today\u2019s state-of-the-art AI systems evolved from the earliest days of the field, how we can characterize their capabilities and trustworthiness and what certainties and uncertainties AI future holds.\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EMelanie Mitchell\u2019s research is at the intersection between artificial \u003Cspan\u003Eintelligence, cognitive science, and complex systems. She has authored or edited six books and published over 100 scholarly papers in these fields. Her 2009 book Complexity: A Guided Tour won the 2010 Phi Beta Kappa Science Book Award, and her 2019 book Artificial Intelligence: A Guide for Thinking Humans was named as one of the five best books on AI by the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. Since 2022, SI has undertaken a comprehensive process of examining its carbon emissions, energy use, travel, transportation, waste, materials and other aspects of institutional practice, with the goal of moving beyond isolated \u201cgreen\u201d initiatives toward a broader transformation of how an arts organization operates. Hessler will reflect on how this process has informed SI\u2019s curatorial thinking, including \u201c\u003Cspan\u003ESpora,\u201d an open-ended initiative that invited artists to intervene in the institution\u2019s architecture, infrastructures and working processes, and \u201cEnergies,\u201d an East Village-wide exhibition that addressed ecological affordances and effects, social formations and political arrangements attached to energy past and present. Rather than treating sustainability as a fixed set of solutions, SI approaches climate action as a collaborative process of learning, experimentation and institutional change. This includes rethinking exhibition materials and production, transportation and shipping, travel, reuse, partnerships and relationships with local communities. Drawing on SI\u2019s experiences, Hessler will consider how museums and arts organizations might redefine institutional success, collaboration, growth and progress in an era of ecological urgency.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Ch5\u003ESpeaker Biography\u003C\/h5\u003E\u003Cp\u003EStefanie Hessler is a curator, writer, editor and the Director of Swiss Institute (SI) in New York. At SI, Hessler has curated and co-curated solo exhibitions by \u003Cspan\u003ESaodat Ismailova,\u0026nbsp;Ali Cherri, Lap-See Lam and Raven Chacon, as well as initiated the curatorial project\u0026nbsp;\u201cSpora,\u201d which invites artists to transform the institution through what she calls \u201cenvironmental institutional critique.\u201d Previously, as the Director of Kunsthall Trondheim in Norway, Hessler co-led the exhibition\u0026nbsp;\u201cSex Ecologies\u201d\u0026nbsp;and edited the accompanying compendium on queer ecologies, sexuality and care in more-than-human worlds (with Seed Box and The MIT Press, 2021). The organization leverages History to build power, confront structural inequality, and assist in shaping an equitable future in Selma, Alabama and elsewhere.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp class=\u0022p2\u0022\u003EScott is a former tenured Professor of African American History. She earned her doctorate in History from the University of Chicago, where she was awarded a fellowship from the University\u2019s Board of Trustees. She received a Master\u2019s Degree in History with distinction from Southern Methodist University and a B.A. in History from Arizona State University. Scott served as the first African American Chair of the Department of History at Hood College in Maryland. During her time at Hood College, she received numerous awards, including the college\u2019s highest commendation for professors\u2014the Excellence in Teaching Award. Scott has also taught at the University of Maryland and the University of Washington, where she was nominated for a Distinguished Teaching Award and received the Outstanding University of Washington Woman Award.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp class=\u0022p2\u0022\u003EScott left her tenured position as an Associate Professor in 2022 to serve as founding Director of the Institute for Common Power (ICP), a non-profit educational branch of Common Power. The Institute for Common Power was dedicated to illuminating undervalued, under-appreciated, pivotal aspects of our collective history as it focused particularly on the histories of marginalized groups. Scott led strategic planning and implementation of programs and initiatives that worked to create equity and voting justice while aiming to dismantle structural inequity. As Director of ICP, Scott spearheaded numerous programs, including Scholars in Motion, the Selma Scholar in Residence program and the Truth and Purpose Learning Tour for Educators and Medical Professionals. She co-lead journeys with numerous organizations, including Frederick County and Minneapolis Public School Districts, the Ohio State University, the Seattle Seahawks and the Los Angeles Lakers. Under Dr. Scott\u2019s leadership, the Institute for Common Power became a nationally recognized leader in history education. At only twenty-four years old, Scott was a member of a small group of social scientists contracted by the Texas Department of Transportation who chronicled the history of an excavated, post-emancipation era African American cemetery (Freedman\u2019s Cemetery) and the surrounding community in Dallas, Texas. The team used the findings to create an expansive report, elementary school curriculum, and a museum exhibit. She is currently a consultant on a new exhibit about the community at the Dallas African American Museum. Scott also chronicled the history of the first African American public housing project in Dallas for the Dallas Housing Authority. She was a key consultant on a permanent exhibit about lynching in Maryland at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum in Baltimore, Maryland. While at Hood College, Scott established a program that taught students how to process the archival collections held by African American Resources, Cultural Heritage Society of Frederick County (AARCH). Most recently, Scott was the lead curator and researcher on several installments in Selma, Alabama that illuminate the rich history of that community, including an outdoor exhibit on Water Avenue near the historic Edmund Pettus Bridge, and a historical marker behind Brown Chapel AME Church at the site where marchers gathered before the March 7, 1965 that came to be known as \u201cBloody Sunday\u201d. However, performance-driven GeoAI models can amplify spatial inequalities, hinder emergency decision-making and increase environmental carbon footprints.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EFrom a critical GIS perspective, this presentation examines responsible GeoAI in climate extremes and disaster mapping through four interconnected dimensions: representativeness, explainability, sustainability and ethics. In this talk, Williams will draw on observations and modeling to explain the various processes and their interactions that have driven the rapid increase toward increasingly large, severe and dangerous wildfires. In this conversation, LACMA curators Leah Lehmbeck, Bobbye Tigerman and Clarissa Esguerra will discuss the curatorial vision behind the reinstallation, examining how the museum has reconsidered traditional narratives through new thematic, cross-cultural and interdisciplinary frameworks. They will explore the intellectual and practical challenges of reinstalling a global collection within a new architectural context, including decisions around object selection, interpretive strategies, audience engagement and accessibility. Esguerra is Curator of Costume and Textiles at LACMA where she has overseen, advised and published on numerous fashion and textile installations including \u201cFashioning Fashion: European Dress in Detail\u201d (2010); co-curator of \u201cLee Alexander McQueen: Mind, Mythos, Muse\u201d (2022); \u201cTimeless: J. Moreno\u201d (2025, The M Museum, Manila); and LACMA\u2019s David Geffen Galleries (2026). In 2019, she curated \u201cPower of Pattern: Central Asian Ikats\u201d and in 2016 co-curated \u201cReigning Men: Fashion in Menswear\u201d; both exhibitions were awarded the Richard Martin Exhibition Award by the Costume Society of America.
