Her team\u2019s activities include coordinating testing for case investigation, analysis of surveillance data, issuing health alerts for healthcare providers, organizing state-wide calls and partners meetings, and supporting tabletop exercises, preparedness planning and public outreach efforts.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EBefore joining ADHS Irene worked on malaria research at the University of Arizona and on dengue surveillance at the Pittsburgh School of Public Health. Her interest in vector-borne diseases started seventeen years ago, during her PhD studies at the University of Edinburgh (UK), where she researched the life cycle of \u003Ci\u003EAfrican trypanosomes\u003C\/i\u003E, and expanded to other tropical diseases during her MPH at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in London (UK). He studies wild mammals, especially desert rodents, to ask how new species are formed (speciation), how they die out (extinction), and how they interact to share pathogens (disease ecology) and generate biodiversity (ecological diversification). He integrates approaches in field mammalogy, paleontology, phylogenomics, and bioinformatics to query the ecological origins of evolutionary dynamics in the mammal tree of life.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EUpham received his doctorate from The University of Chicago\u2019s Committee on Evolutionary Biology in 2014, studying the molecular and fossil relationships of Neotropical caviomorph rodents. He then did a short postdoc at McMaster University studying the largest mammalian genome (Tympanoctomys vizcacha rats in Argentina). In 2015, he moved to Yale University as a postdoc on the VertLife Terrestrial project where he led construction of a comprehensive new tree of life for ~6,000 species of mammals. In 2020, he joined the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/biokic.asu.edu\/\u0022\u003EBiodiversity Knowledge Integration Center\u003C\/a\u003E (BioKIC) in ASU\u0027s School of Life Sciences as an assistant research professor. In 2022, he was hired to a tenure-track position as an assistant professor in SOLS, with lab space in the newly constructed \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2Yi05cx9FNc\u0022\u003EWalton Center for Planetary Health\u003C\/a\u003E. He is funded by the National Institutes of Health (previous \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/reporter.nih.gov\/search\/jU_fu0gzuEGANqOW-JfIYw\/project-details\/10289637\u0022\u003ER21\u003C\/a\u003E, current \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/reporter.nih.gov\/search\/jU_fu0gzuEGANqOW-JfIYw\/project-details\/11022146\u0022\u003ER35\u003C\/a\u003E) to study the evidence underlying mammal-to-virus interactions globally, and has initiated work on rodent and viral population genomics in Arizona\u0027s \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/skyislandalliance.org\/our-region\/the-sky-islands\/\u0022\u003EMadrean sky island region\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAs a faculty member, Upham has promoted opportunities\u0026nbsp;to underrepresented students in his own lab, and by assisting with ASU\u0027s \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/serv.biokic.asu.edu\/jedi\/index.html\u0022\u003EBiocollections Scholar Program\u003C\/a\u003E (2021-2022) and the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/libguides.asu.edu\/MarchMammalMadness\u0022\u003EMarch Mammal Madness\u003C\/a\u003E competition (Genetics Team, 2022-present).
