In this talk, Armin Grunwald confronts one of the defining puzzles of our era: technological progress generates unintended consequences that demand still more innovation. This unending spiral has shaped the Anthropocene so far. Grunwald argues for a responsible path between blind faith that new technology will fix what old technology broke, and nostalgic longing for a pre-industrial world. He directs the Institute for Technology Assessment and Systems Analysis (ITAS) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and, since 2002, has headed the Office of Technology Assessment at the German Bundestag (TAB). Since 2007 he has held the Chair of Philosophy and Ethics of Technology at KIT. Trained originally in physics, he later turned to philosophy, earning his habilitation at the University of Marburg. Scott is a former Professor of African American History and Chair of the Department of History at Hood College. She is an Associate Editor for the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/journal\/jsporthistory\u0022\u003EJournal of Sports History\u003C\/a\u003E and a member of the Editorial Staff for the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/journal\/jamericanhistory\u0022\u003EJournal of American History\u003C\/a\u003E.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp class=\u0022p1\u0022\u003EScott earned her doctorate in history from the University of Chicago. She was awarded a fellowship from the University\u2019s Board of Trustees. Additionally, she is frequently featured on regional and national media programs. Contracted by the Texas Department of Transportation, Scott was a member of a small group of historians who chronicled the history of an excavated, post-emancipation era, African American cemetery (Freedman\u2019s Cemetery) and the surrounding community in Dallas, Texas. The team used the findings to create an expansive report, elementary school curriculum, and a museum exhibit. Scott also chronicled the history of the first African American public housing project in Dallas for the Dallas Housing Authority. While at Hood College, Scott established a program that taught students how to process the archival collections held by African American Resources, Cultural Heritage Society of Frederick County (AARCH). Scott was a key consultant on a permanent exhibit about lynching in Maryland at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum in Baltimore, Maryland. He has also studied employer health mandates, unions and collective bargaining, outsourcing and subcontracting, gun laws and violence, and the capitalization of private information in stock prices.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EHe has published in leading journals including the Quarterly Journal of Economics, American Economic Review, Review of Economics and Statistics, and American Economic Journal. Current projects include wage inequality, labor market competition, the employment and distributional effects of minimum wages, sectoral bargaining systems, fairness concerns in the workplace, the interplay of behavioral biases and labor market power, the impact of unemployment benefits, and the role of firm wage policies in the growth of inequality. He has also studied employer health mandates, unions and collective bargaining, outsourcing and subcontracting, gun laws and violence, and the capitalization of private information in stock prices.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EHe has published in leading journals including the Quarterly Journal of Economics, American Economic Review, Review of Economics and Statistics, and American Economic Journal. He has testified before Congress, consulted with the UK government, advised many state legislatures, and is invited to speak about his research around the world. He has written opinion pieces for The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, and Time Magazine, and has been interviewed extensively on radio and television, including NPR, MSNBC, CNBC, and Bloomberg TV.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EDube received his B.A. in Economics and M.A. in Development Policy from Stanford University and his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Chicago.
