This is one of the first volumes to shine light on the sexualized violence that some Holocaust survivors endured in the hands of the Soviet Army, partisans, rescuers, and army personnel in filtration camps during the liberation process. By focusing on testimonies and memoirs, this book discusses in detail a wide range of interactions, including sexual violence, rape, forced cohabitation, sex barter, aid, and romance. The book addresses methodological challenges of employing survivors\u2019 testimonies in an analysis of a traumatic history of liberation sexualized violence. It explores the strategies survivors employed while recounting these traumatic experiences, and examines how survivors\u2019 experiences of sexualized violence during liberation have been both included in and excluded from public memory. The book argues that this narrative \u2013 often used to position libertarianism as the true liberal tradition and social democratic liberalism as a distortion \u2013 is built on historical misunderstandings of the terms \u2018liberal\u2019 and \u2018liberalism\u2019.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EFocusing on English and American contexts, the book uses primary sources to show that the free-market doctrines of Adam Smith, later interpreted by thinkers like Hayek and Friedman as libertarian principles, should not be conflated with liberalism. Instead, liberalism first emerged in nineteenth-century England as a political philosophy rooted in constitutionalism and republicanism. The book also examines how Franklin D. Roosevelt reshaped American political language by associating \u201cliberals\u201d with New Deal supporters and \u201cconservatives\u201d with its opponents. By exploring these two pivotal moments and the broader political and economic history that connects them, de Marneffe redefines classical liberalism and critiques rigid interpretations of liberal thought. Klein, ASU Associate Teaching Professor of Philosophy\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EDesigned to spark necessary conversations about ethics in college sports, this collection focuses on the kinds of ethical concerns that arise at the intersection of athletics and education, such as fairness, athletic excellence, and athlete well-being. \u003Cspan\u003EThe first chapters examine college sports at a systematic level, considering the ways we can evaluate college sport as a whole, as well as how we ought to structure college sports in ways that are fairer and better tests of athletic excellence. The second section looks more closely at the interplay of the academic institutions and athletics, arguing that since college sports programs are part of institutions of higher learning, we need to consider the purposes of these institutions when evaluating college sports. Moreover, the well-being and protection of college athletes is central to an ethically defensible college system. Through an intertextual analysis of Ibn al-Jawzi\u2019s works in various genres, this book details how his ideal form of rulership reflected the emotional norms and pietistic moral virtues promoted in Muslim hortatory sermons. It also examines the emotional strategies deployed in his efforts to reform the rulers of his time. In highlighting the importance of piety in Ibn al-Jawzi\u2019s political discourses, the book points to a new reading of the history of Islamic political thought that, rather than foregrounding order and military prowess, considers competing political languages among medieval Muslim intellectuals. It explores the various dimensions of Jewish environmentalism: official statements of Jewish denominations, eco-theologies, eco-hermeneutics, eco-feminism, and public theology; and also links Jewish environmentalism to main forces in modern Jewish history - Zionism, and Americanization.
