In the present era, the world is experiencing a resurgence in extremism, exclusionary nationalism, and authoritarianism. At the same time, democracies, even longstanding, stable ones, have experienced erosion and backsliding in democratic processes, practices, and institutions. These trends are highly concerning given that authoritarian states are particularly prone to genocide and mass violence.

About Genocide Awareness Week: Rosenbluth Family Charitable Foundation Genocide Awareness Week (GAW) is a week-long event seeking to address how we, as a global society, confront violent actions and current and ongoing threats of genocide and related mass atrocity crimes, throughout the world, while also looking to the past for guidance and to honor those affected by genocide.

View the schedule here

https://asuevents.asu.edu/event/rosenbluth-family-charitable-foundation-genocide-awareness-week-2026?id=3
Register","ticketing_rsvp_txt2":"
https://jewishstudies.asu.edu/GAW2026","ticketing_rsvp_url2":
https://asuevents.asu.edu/event/rosenbluth-family-charitable-foundation-genocide-awareness-week-2026?id=3
Melikian Center, School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies, The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, The Melikian Center: Russian, Eurasian and East European Studies
https://shprs.asu.edu/">shprs.asu.edu 1912 the former Russian Orthodox missionary-tu

shprs.asu.edu 1912 the former Russian Orthodox missionary-turned-ethnographer Tikhon Semenovich Rozhdestvenskii and his scholarly partner Mikhail Ivanovich Uspenskii published a collection of 716 mystical sectarian songs in the prestigious Notes of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society, Ethnographic Section. A major source for the collection was Rozhdestvenskii’s Manuscript No. 1, which he had obtained from a leader of a group of so-called "flagellants," who were rumored to engage in ecstatic orgies and to worship “sectarian gods and goddesses.” Rozhdestvenskii and Uspenskii would no doubt have been surprised to learn that several of the songs in their collection had not originated in Russia at all but were translations of popular pietistic hymns from Europe and the United States. For example, Frances Jane Crosby (better known as Fanny Crosby), the blind American Methodist bard who authored thousands hymns, including such classics as "Blessed Assurance," wrote one of the songs copied down into Manuscript No. 1.
