Her research centers on connections between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean in the late medieval period, especially the trade in slaves which flourished during the thirteenth through fifteenth centuries. Her first book, dealing with the processes of shipping, marketing, and purchasing slaves and the Genoese, Mamluk, and Venetian merchants who conducted this trade, is\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.upenn.edu\/pennpress\/book\/16016.html\u0022\u003EThat Most Precious Merchandise: The Mediterranean Trade in Black Sea Slaves, 1260-1500\u003C\/a\u003E\u003Cspan\u003E. It was awarded the Paul E. Lovejoy Prize by the \u003C\/span\u003EJournal of Global Slavery\u003Cspan\u003E, the ASU Institute for Humanities Research book prize, and honorable mentions for the Middle East Medievalists Book Prize and the Mediterranean Seminar\u0027s Wadjih F. al-Hamwi Prize for the best first book in Mediterranean studies. His research interests include medieval Islamic political thought; premodern Islamic scholarly culture and transmission of knowledge; Qur\u2019anic exegesis (tafsir); and Arabic-Islamic historical and biographical writings.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EHis first monograph,\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/edinburghuniversitypress.com\/book-preaching-pious-rulership-in-medieval-islam.html\u0022\u003EPreaching Pious Rulership in Medieval Islam: Ibn al-Jawzi\u0027s Political Thought\u0026nbsp;(Edinburgh University Press, 2026)\u003C\/a\u003E,\u0026nbsp;examines the relationship between preaching, emotions, and political thought in medieval Islam. It focuses on the political discourses\u0026nbsp;of Ibn al-Jawzi, a 12th-century Muslim religious scholar and preacher in late Abbasid Baghdad. Through an intertextual analysis of Ibn al-Jawzi\u2019s political writings, preaching manuals, collections of sermons, and historical and biographical writings, this book sparks new approaches\u0026nbsp;in the study of Islamic political thought and probes the interconnections between politics, homiletics, and emotions. He is currently working on his second book project on the political thought of the Mu\u0027tazilites from the 8th to the 15th century.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ELiew\u2019s research articles have been published in the Journal of Islamic Studies, Al-Qan\u1e6dara: Revista de Estudios\u0026nbsp;\u00c1rabes, Arabica, the Journal of the American Oriental Society, New Trends in Qur\u2019anic Studies: Text, Context and Interpretation (edited by Mun\u2019im Sirry), and Malay-Indonesian Islamic Studies: Festschrift in Honor of Peter G. Prof. Ribak has published numerous articles in journals such as, \u0022AJS Review\u0022, \u0022American Jewish History\u0022, \u0022East European Jewish Affairs\u0022, \u0022Israel Studies Forum\u0022, \u0022Jewish Quarterly Review\u0022, \u0022Journal of American Ethnic History\u0022, \u0022Modern Judaism\u0022, and \u0022Polin: A Journal of Polish-Jewish Studies\u0022, among others, as well as many book chapters, of which most recently is \u0022Cleanliness Like That of the Germans\u0027: Eastern European Jew\u0027s Views of Germans and the Dynamics of Migration and Disillusionment\u0022, in Steven J. From 2010-2022, she was the senior director of the Office of Fellowships at Mason. Throughout her career, she has worked toward helping underrepresented students gain access to transformational education abroad opportunities and careers in public service. Since joining Mason in 2010, Berger has helped students secure more than $2 million in external funding for national scholarships and fellowships such as the Boren, Fulbright, Gilman, Truman, National Science Foundation, and Critical Language Scholarship. She has helped 30 students receive Fulbright awards, many of whom are first generation or minority students. She is the recipient of the Spirit of King Award (2015) and the Margaret C. Howell Award (2018) at Mason. \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cspan\u003EIn 2021, she was elected President and Board Chair of NAFSA: Association of International Educators. Berger also serves on several education abroad advisory boards, the AIFS academic advisory board, and Globalize DC. She previously served as director of leadership and international programs at the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education (NAFEO), where she managed a federal internship program and helped minority-serving institutions develop campus internationalization strategies. During her tenure at NAFEO, Berger organized three national dialogues on diversity in international education, bringing together college presidents, federal agencies, ambassadors, and nonprofit leaders to improve access to study abroad. She has also previously been a regular contributor to\u0026nbsp;The American Prospect\u0026nbsp;online magazine as a correspondent on race and gender issues.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cspan\u003EBerger is affiliate faculty in the Center for Mason Legacies and the Department of History and Art History at Mason, where she teaches classes on African and African American art, museum curating, and South African history and culture. As an art historian, her research focuses on the intersections of art and social activism in the Black and Jewish diasporas. The breadth and diversity of his writings show that slavery had\u0026nbsp;multiple, diverse (and seemingly contradictory) meanings in Jewish culture and the larger societies of which they were apart. Thus, Maimonides\u0027s writings illuminate the social, legal, and intellectual history of medieval slavery. Using examples from his Hebrew and Arabic writings, Perry will show how Maimonides treated slavery as a legal and philosophical problem, an intimate part of everyday life, and a practice through which Jewish identities and communal boundaries were constructed.
