A major source for the collection was Rozhdestvenskii’s Manuscript No. 1, which he had obtained from a leader of a group of so-called "flagellants," who were rumored to engage in ecstatic orgies and to worship “sectarian gods and goddesses.” Rozhdestvenskii and Uspenskii would no doubt have been surprised to learn that several of the songs in their collection had not originated in Russia at all but were translations of popular pietistic hymns from Europe and the United States. For example, Frances Jane Crosby (better known as Fanny Crosby), the blind American Methodist bard who authored thousands hymns, including such classics as "Blessed Assurance," wrote one of the songs copied down into Manuscript No. 1. Moreover, Crosby’s hymn was included in a completely different, authoritative collection of Russian folk poetry collected by the Bolshevik scholar Vladimir Bonch-Bruevich. Lunch will be provided!

Guest facilitated by ASU Gender Studies Ph.D. student, Sarah Keeton, the April 2026 reading group session will explore the theme of trans pleasure in Transgender Studies scholarship and memoirs. A 2025 journal article in Sex and Sexualities begins, "Cisness is fucking up our sex lives. And not in a good way" (Robinson et. al 2025). This reading group session centers the praxis, reclamation, and centering of trans pleasure -- from trans sexualities and trans sexual cultures to the pleasure and joy found in trans-affirming parties, comedy, social media, and everyday life. Trans pleasure is a sensual and affective mode of relation that is vital, insurgent, and empowering in our increasingly anti-transgender political climate. Several recent examples of trans pleasure have been cultivated and defined despite exclusionary political practices enacted by white feminism, TERF feminisms, and anti-black feminisms. I am talking about Bell experiments, the subject of the 2022 Nobel Prize in physics, based on Bell’s 1964 theorem. These falsify not a particular theory, but all theories which satisfy a set of natural metaphysical assumptions. In recent years, new theorems along these lines have been devised, and I will talk about one by myself and co-workers that combines Bell’s 1964 idea with those of two other scientists of roughly the same era. Specifically, realizing a thinking machine (à la Turing) on a quantum computer, in the role of Wigner’s friend, on one side of a Bell experiment, would rule out a set of still widely held metaphysical assumptions. Either that, or it would discover completely new physics, which would be even more exciting. This talk proposes a different starting point: scams are rhetorical performances. Drawing from classical rhetoric, persuasion theory and media studies, we examine how fraudulent communications construct credibility, stage emotional escalation and engineer identification. From romance scams to investment fraud, scammers rely on narrative sequencing, strategic ambiguity and linguistic framing to transform suspicion into trust. By situating online fraud within the tradition of rhetorical studies, we argue for an applied humanities framework that treats persuasion as infrastructure. Combating fraud, we suggest, requires not only better algorithms, but better rhetorical literacy.

This event is hybrid, online attendees may join by ASU Live.

About the speakers

Jens E. But, as Peter understood, a focus on contemporary Indian issues such as tribal sovereignty, resource development and gaming does not mean that the more distant past has been left behind. Often the most contentious “modern” problems in Indian country have roots deep in the past. Thus, history remains relevant to contemporary Indians as well as to their non-Indian neighbors.

A light lunch will be provided, but RSVP is required.

About the speaker

Albert L. Conventional narratives of the war have routinely characterized the mass-scale violence and the grave humanitarian crisis in reductive and localized terms, arguing that they are a result of a political rivalry between a powerful militia and senior Islamist-backed military cadres of the Sudan Armed Forces.
