Her first book, dealing with the processes of shipping, marketing, and purchasing slaves and the Genoese, Mamluk, and Venetian merchants who conducted this trade, is\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.upenn.edu\/pennpress\/book\/16016.html\u0022\u003EThat Most Precious Merchandise: The Mediterranean Trade in Black Sea Slaves, 1260-1500\u003C\/a\u003E\u003Cspan\u003E. It was awarded the Paul E. His research interests include medieval Islamic political thought; premodern Islamic scholarly culture and transmission of knowledge; Qur\u2019anic exegesis (tafsir); and Arabic-Islamic historical and biographical writings.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EHis first monograph,\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/edinburghuniversitypress.com\/book-preaching-pious-rulership-in-medieval-islam.html\u0022\u003EPreaching Pious Rulership in Medieval Islam: Ibn al-Jawzi\u0027s Political Thought\u0026nbsp;(Edinburgh University Press, 2026)\u003C\/a\u003E,\u0026nbsp;examines the relationship between preaching, emotions, and political thought in medieval Islam. It focuses on the political discourses\u0026nbsp;of Ibn al-Jawzi, a 12th-century Muslim religious scholar and preacher in late Abbasid Baghdad. Through an intertextual analysis of Ibn al-Jawzi\u2019s political writings, preaching manuals, collections of sermons, and historical and biographical writings, this book sparks new approaches\u0026nbsp;in the study of Islamic political thought and probes the interconnections between politics, homiletics, and emotions. He is currently working on his second book project on the political thought of the Mu\u0027tazilites from the 8th to the 15th century.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ELiew\u2019s research articles have been published in the Journal of Islamic Studies, Al-Qan\u1e6dara: Revista de Estudios\u0026nbsp;\u00c1rabes, Arabica, the Journal of the American Oriental Society, New Trends in Qur\u2019anic Studies: Text, Context and Interpretation (edited by Mun\u2019im Sirry), and Malay-Indonesian Islamic Studies: Festschrift in Honor of Peter G. Her first book project concerns non-cloistered religious women, known as \u003Ci\u003Ebizzoche\u003C\/i\u003E, in fifteenth-century Rome and explores the religious, political, and economic networks they created. Throughout her career, she has worked toward helping underrepresented students gain access to transformational education abroad opportunities and careers in public service. Since joining Mason in 2010, Berger has helped students secure more than $2 million in external funding for national scholarships and fellowships such as the Boren, Fulbright, Gilman, Truman, National Science Foundation, and Critical Language Scholarship. She has helped 30 students receive Fulbright awards, many of whom are first generation or minority students. She is the recipient of the Spirit of King Award (2015) and the Margaret C. Howell Award (2018) at Mason. \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cspan\u003EIn 2021, she was elected President and Board Chair of NAFSA: Association of International Educators. Berger also serves on several education abroad advisory boards, the AIFS academic advisory board, and Globalize DC. She previously served as director of leadership and international programs at the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education (NAFEO), where she managed a federal internship program and helped minority-serving institutions develop campus internationalization strategies. During her tenure at NAFEO, Berger organized three national dialogues on diversity in international education, bringing together college presidents, federal agencies, ambassadors, and nonprofit leaders to improve access to study abroad. She has also previously been a regular contributor to\u0026nbsp;The American Prospect\u0026nbsp;online magazine as a correspondent on race and gender issues.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cspan\u003EBerger is affiliate faculty in the Center for Mason Legacies and the Department of History and Art History at Mason, where she teaches classes on African and African American art, museum curating, and South African history and culture. As an art historian, her research focuses on the intersections of art and social activism in the Black and Jewish diasporas. In 2018, she designed and led a study abroad course in South Africa called, \u201cMonuments, Museums, and Memory in South Africa\u201d that challenged students to look at the intersections of art and social activism in public monuments and memorials.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cspan\u003EBerger received her MA and PhD in art history from Duke University and a bachelor\u2019s degree in art history and international relations from Stanford University. And two, scholarly commentary that, rather than inertly explain or obtusely theorize difficulty, shows how literary devices themselves generate meaning. They thus model for readers how to access metaphors, allusions, and images in real time\u2014just like Shakespeare\u2019s original audience did. By focusing on testimonies and memoirs, this book discusses in detail a wide range of interactions, including sexual violence, rape, forced cohabitation, sex barter, aid, and romance. The book addresses methodological challenges of employing survivors\u2019 testimonies in an analysis of a traumatic history of liberation sexualized violence. It explores the strategies survivors employed while recounting these traumatic experiences, and examines how survivors\u2019 experiences of sexualized violence during liberation have been both included in and excluded from public memory. She teaches courses on historical methods, modern Polish-Jewish history and Poland in WWII, the Holocaust, European and East European history, and history of antisemitism, among others.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EShe is an author of two books on postwar Polish-Jewish history. Her book \u0027Beyond Violence: Jewish Survivors in Poland and Slovakia in 1944-1948\u0027 (Cambridge University Press, 2014) is a comparative study of the non-Jewish\/Jewish relations in Poland and Slovakia after the Second World War. The book was the 2016 Jordan Schnitzer Book Award Finalist (2nd place) and a recipient of the 2015 Barbara Heldt Prize Honorable Mention. Her first book \u0027Pogrom \u017byd\u00f3w w Krakowie 11 sierpnia 1945 r., a case study of the pogrom in Krak\u00f3w in August 1945\u0027, was based on her awarded MA thesis and published by the Jewish Historical Institute in Polish in 2000. She is also a co-editor (with Nina Paulovicova and Joanna Michlic) of \u0027Shattered Liberation: Sexualized Violence against Holocaust Survivors, 1943-46\u0027 (Purdue Univ.
