VOCs are hypothesized to contribute to a poorly defined illness usually called \u2018sick building syndrome\u2019.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EIn this lecture, National Academy of Sciences member Joan Bennett will discuss how the Bennett laboratory has focused on the VOCs produced by molds that contaminate indoor environments and pioneered the use of genetic models for testing the bioactivity of these compounds. Mixtures of VOCs emitted from living fungal cultures, and chemical standards of individual VOCs, are toxic in a Drosophila melanogaster bioassay. Fungal volatiles serve as molecular signals that can act at a distance and trigger negative metabolic processes and deserve greater attention in the context of the health of people living in enclosed indoor spaces such as those encountered on nuclear submarines and the International Space Station where mold contamination is often present.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EJoan Bennett is the Ida A. Richardson Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Tulane University. The Bennett lab has pioneered the use of genetic model systems such as Arabidopsis, Drosophila and Saccharomyces to study the physiological impact of fungal VOCs. Prior to returning to Tulane in 2025, Bennett served as Associate Vice President for the Office for the Promotion of Women in Science, Engineering and Mathematics at Rutgers from 2006\u20132014 and is currently a professor emerita of the Rutgers Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology. She is a past Editor-in-Chief of Mycologia; past Vice President of the British Mycological Society and the International Union of Microbiological Societies; as well as past President of the American Society for Microbiology and the Society for Industrial Microbiology \u0026amp; Biotechnology. Pangenome graphs address this by jointly encoding variation across many genomes, but building and storing explicit graphs at population scale is computationally prohibitive. In this seminar I will describe an alternative: rather than constructing the full graph, we use pangenome alignment and indexed representations to answer the same queries directly. This reduces compute and memory by orders of magnitude, making population-scale analysis tractable on a single laptop.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAndrea Guarracino is an Assistant Professor at the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) in Phoenix, Arizona. She is the Associate Dean of Health Humanities for the John Shufeldt School of Medicine and Medical Engineering and Director of Humanities Integration for ASU Health. She spent the last three years designing and implementing a core humanities curriculum for Shufeldt, and she is leading the establishment of the Health Humanities Commons in ASU Health. Comparative oncology provides an evolutionary framework for understanding this variation and for identifying naturally evolved mechanisms of cancer suppression. In this talk, I will examine how life history, cancer prevalence, and genome evolution interact across vertebrates. I will discuss evidence from large and long-lived mammals, including whales and elephants, as well as comparative analyses linking somatic mutation rates, tumor suppressor gene copy number, transposable element activity, and broader patterns of gene family evolution with cancer prevalence and malignancy. I will also highlight recent efforts to integrate cancer phenotype data from zoological populations with increasingly diverse genomic resources. Together, these approaches illustrate how evolutionary genomics can reveal both shared and lineage-specific strategies of cancer resistance and identify biological pathways relevant to cancer susceptibility. Breath-hold divers such as seals are exceptionally tolerant to hypoxia, and execute coordinated cardiovascular adjustments during diving in order to conserve on-board oxygen for critical tissues. Small-bodied hibernators cycle between bouts of cold torpor lasting several weeks and rapid rewarming arousal periods of less than a day. They must therefore orchestrate rapidly reversible metabolic depression, and undergo dramatic changes in body temperature, oxygen consumption and tissue perfusion without harm. Hindle seeks to elucidate molecular mechanisms that underlie physiological specializations by combining whole-animal telemetry measurements in the field with cell culture systems in the lab. Insecticides are one of our most effective tools for reducing disease transmission, but their widespread use has driven the rapid evolution of resistance in mosquito populations worldwide. Understanding how resistance evolves, and how it can be managed, is therefore a central challenge at the intersection of evolutionary biology, medicine, and public health.\u0026nbsp;\u003Cspan\u003EIn this seminar, I will discuss how evolutionary principles can be used to better understand and slow the emergence of insecticide resistance. Drawing on laboratory experiments, experimental evolution, and field observations, I will explore how factors such as insecticide dose, environmental conditions, and patterns of insecticide use shape resistance evolution. I will also discuss strategies for managing resistance while maintaining effective mosquito control, including recent developments in mosquito populations in Maricopa County. Together, these examples illustrate how integrating evolutionary biology into vector control can improve our ability to sustainably combat mosquito-borne diseases.\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ESilvie Huijben is\u0026nbsp;an evolutionary biologist with a keen interest in the arms-race between us humans and the organisms we aim to control, in particular resistance evolution of malaria parasites and disease-transmitting mosquitoes. Her\u0026nbsp;lab studies the evolutionary ecology of resistant organisms with the key question: how can we use evolutionary theory to better design resistance management strategies?
