Every year, the Arntzen lecture series hosts distinguished researchers to discuss the latest developments in nature-based science, research and solutions development.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThis year we are excited to welcome Melanie Mitchell, a James B. Alley Jr. Professor at the Santa Fe Institute, as our featured speaker.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EToday\u2019s AI systems are able to solve thorny problems in mathematics, \u003Cspan\u003Ecomputing, and many areas of science. At the same time, they are prone to hallucination, unhumanlike errors, intractable biases and exhibit a confounding \u201cjaggedness\u201d in their intelligence.\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EIn this talk,\u003Cspan\u003E Mitchell will describe how today\u2019s state-of-the-art AI systems evolved from the earliest days of the field, how we can characterize their capabilities and trustworthiness and what certainties and uncertainties AI future holds.\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EMelanie Mitchell\u2019s research is at the intersection between artificial \u003Cspan\u003Eintelligence, cognitive science, and complex systems. She has authored or edited six books and published over 100 scholarly papers in these fields. Her 2009 book Complexity: A Guided Tour won the 2010 Phi Beta Kappa Science Book Award, and her 2019 book Artificial Intelligence: A Guide for Thinking Humans was named as one of the five best books on AI by the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. They face intense cold both above and within the icy waters of Antarctica. In addition to the likely unique thermal strategies required for survival at high latitudes in ice seals, diving mammals rely on their impressive breath hold capabilities to exploit resources in the deep ocean. This\u0026nbsp;talk explores the physiology that defines and constrains this ability in seals. Dramatic cardiovascular shifts during submergence include depressed heart rate alongside altered perfusion of internal organs; both are designed to extend breath-holding by lowering requirements for oxygen. We will focus on 1) physiological measurements collected from seals at sea, as well as 2) lab-based investigations into protective mechanisms that likely support diving ability, and 3) evidence\u0026nbsp;from the Weddell seal genome.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cspan\u003EDr. Allyson Hindle is an Associate Professor in the School of Life Sciences at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. Allyson is an animal physiologist who studies how some animals can thrive in extreme environments when others (including humans) cannot. She has worked with a variety of mammals, from small hibernators to seals and sea lions. Her work has taken her to such remote locations as Antarctica. Fefferman (PhD) is a Professor and Director of the School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences in the New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences at Arizona State University. She also serves as Director of the NSF-funded Center for Analysis and Prediction of Pandemic Expansion (\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/appex.org\/\u0022\u003E\u003Cspan\u003EAPPEX\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E\u003Cspan\u003E).\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EFefferman\u2019s research lies at the intersection of mathematical biology, epidemiology, and complex systems science. Her work focuses on understanding how disease dynamics interact with behavior, social structure, and environmental systems, with particular emphasis on higher-order interactions, network dynamics, and the co-evolution of biological and social processes. She has led and contributed to numerous interdisciplinary efforts aimed at improving pandemic prediction, preparedness, and response, including large-scale federally funded initiatives such as APPEX. Insecticides are one of our most effective tools for reducing disease transmission, but their widespread use has driven the rapid evolution of resistance in mosquito populations worldwide. Understanding how resistance evolves, and how it can be managed, is therefore a central challenge at the intersection of evolutionary biology, medicine, and public health.\u0026nbsp;\u003Cspan\u003EIn this seminar, I will discuss how evolutionary principles can be used to better understand and slow the emergence of insecticide resistance. Drawing on laboratory experiments, experimental evolution, and field observations, I will explore how factors such as insecticide dose, environmental conditions, and patterns of insecticide use shape resistance evolution. I will also discuss strategies for managing resistance while maintaining effective mosquito control, including recent developments in mosquito populations in Maricopa County. Together, these examples illustrate how integrating evolutionary biology into vector control can improve our ability to sustainably combat mosquito-borne diseases.\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ESilvie Huijben is\u0026nbsp;an evolutionary biologist with a keen interest in the arms-race between us humans and the organisms we aim to control, in particular resistance evolution of malaria parasites and disease-transmitting mosquitoes. Her\u0026nbsp;lab studies the evolutionary ecology of resistant organisms with the key question: how can we use evolutionary theory to better design resistance management strategies?
