As part of her research on Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs), she created CYBOTAGE, a cross-disciplinary initiative investigating BCIs\u2019 impacts on autonomy, society, and warfare. Through CYBOTAGE, she documents veterans\u2019 perspectives via surveys, interviews, workshops, and exhibitions, broadening access to critical discussions on human enhancement and building a national archive of veterans\u2019 visualizations of life-size \u201cenhanced\u201d bodies. I am talking about Bell experiments, the subject of the 2022 Nobel Prize in physics, based on Bell\u2019s 1964 theorem. These falsify not a particular theory, but all theories which satisfy a set of natural metaphysical assumptions. In recent years, new theorems along these lines have been devised, and I will talk about one by myself and co-workers that combines Bell\u2019s 1964 idea with those of two other scientists of roughly the same era. Specifically, realizing a thinking machine (\u00e0 la Turing) on a quantum computer, in the role of Wigner\u2019s friend, on one side of a Bell experiment, would rule out a set of still widely held metaphysical assumptions. Either that, or it would discover completely new physics, which would be even more exciting. I will finish by presenting my own tentative metaphysical commitments, about sentience in AI amongst other things, which have been influenced by the theorem.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe \u201cThinking Beyond\u201d webinar series features renowned physicists Paul Davies, Sara Walker and Maulik Parikh from the Beyond Center for Fundamental Concepts in Science at Arizona State University and addresses a big question\/topic in science. After completing his PhD at the University of Queensland in 1994, he did a postdoc at the University of Auckland, before returning to Queensland in 1996. He has been at Griffith University since 1999, and was the Director of the Centre for Quantum Dynamics there from 2007 to 2025. Wiseman has won several Australian medals and prizes for his physics research, and was the senior author on a paper that won the 2023 Ehrenfest Award for Quantum Foundations from the Austrian (not Australian!) As scientific output grows at an exponential scale, existing oversight tools such as disclosure notices struggle to keep pace with the volume and complexity of potential conflicts of interest in health research. This talk introduces InfluenceMapper\u003Cspan\u003E, a large language model (LLM)\u2013based tool designed to extract, structure, and analyze disclosure information from scientific publications at scale. The presentation describes the development of the tool and presents empirical findings regarding patterns of sponsorship bias across areas of health research. It also examines how such tools can support agency missions related to research integrity, evidence evaluation, and public trust. Fueling this expansion was an explosion in the global bond market, at the hub of which stood one family\u2014the Rothschilds, arguably the wealthiest banking family in history. In the early 1870s, the bubble burst. Stock markets from Vienna to New York crashed, and dozens of railroads and many governments defaulted. Financial officials responded by blundering into a precipitous remaking of the global currency system\u2014exacerbating the ensuing economic collapse and setting the stage for decades of a punitive deflation that sparked waves of anti-globalist populism.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EIn his new book,\u0026nbsp;1873: The Rothschilds, the First Great Depression, and the Making of the Modern World, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Liaquat Ahamed examines this enthralling history and how the crisis of 1873 was, among other things, a death blow to Reconstruction in the United States and the proximate cause of the Ottoman Empire\u2019s slow death spiral. He also explores how though the Rothschilds had presciently kept a low profile during the bubble, when the deluge came, they were viciously scapegoated as part of a wider hatred directed at \u201cJewish finance,\u201d a strain of antisemitism that would come to full evil flower during the twentieth century.
