Lyric Opera Theatre kicks off its 50th anniversary season with Offenbach's sparkling operetta, La Périchole, filled to the brim with enchanting melodies, high-kicking can-cans, whirling waltzes, and riotous comic action. Loosely based on the true story of an 18th century street singer who became the mistress of the Viceroy of Peru, the operetta is a bubbly concoction which mixes the necessary ingredients of disguise, mistaken identity, an inebriated wedding, crowds of happy dancing peasants, a glittering presentation at court, and an escape from the palace dungeon before the true lovers are reunited for a joyous happy ending. A fun-filled evening perfect for the entire family!
Music by Jacques Offenbach; English adaptation by Maurice Valency after the Meilhac & Halévy libretto; sung in English; stage direction by Dale Dreyfoos; musical direction by William Reber and W.P. Sterneman III; choreography by Ashley Waggoner.
La Périchole is presented by arrangement with Bote & Bock Berlin and Boosey & Hawkes, Inc.
Dr. Kenneth Seipp, Lyric Opera Theatre Founder, will be honored at the October 4th performance ("Official 50th anniversary performance"). The Lyric Opera Theatre will host a reception in Cowley Lobby at the School of Music immediately following this performance.
