About the Show

Working in interdisciplinary teams, students and faculty have been organizing panels and public events, producing podcasts and videos, and developing other activities, impact outcomes, and campaigns that address grand social challenges in the global community.

  • Food, Health and Climate Change with Joni Adamson and Rimjhim Aggarwal
    • Plastic Reduction will present the results of their informational and giveaway campaign about the damaging effects of plastic on the environment. Featuring Sebastian Ching, John Stachnik, Madison Canon, Mitsuki Tanigaki, Parker Phillips, Jasmin Otto, and Eliana Burns
    • Old McDonald's Farm is a parodic imagining of a dystopic, yet eerily possible future that confronts the audience with the embarrassing humor of greenwashing in the food industry while simultaneously evoking reflection on the food swamps, local foods, the fast-food industry, and health through the medium of an interactive public art piece. Through parody and art, Old McDonald's Farm brings about three fundamental questions 1) Is this a future of local food that is possible? 2) Is this the future of local food that I want? And 3) How do I go about creating the future that I want? Featuring Zane Encinas and Ziggy Bowker.
    • Food Map and Sustainability will be presenting information about sustainable food options at ASU gathered through research and surveys, including local sourcing, working conditions, animal welfare, and nutrition and more. Featuring Linette Kalandos.
    • Food Pod will talk about the importance of knowing where our food comes from, the issues facing our food systems, and possible solutions for such issues here in Maricopa County. Featuring Alma Varon and Samantha Esparaza.
    • Seed and Story will be sharing clips about the power of storytelling in local food systems and discussing their experience creating a film in midst of COVID-19. Featuring Taina Diaz-Reyes, Mohadeseh Mousazadeh, and Kirby Skoric.
  • Deconstructing Race with Isaac Joslin and Yeukai Mlambo
    • Racial Representation in Video Games will be presenting and discussing a segment from a pre-recorded panel that explores how video games can undermine and challenge racial stereotypes in mainstream media. Featuring David Jonathon Jaulus, Claire Hetrick, Edwin Wong, and Anthony Rosas.
  • Epidemic Emergences with Jennifer Brian and Cora Fox
    • Barriers to the COVID-19 Vaccination will be sharing their experience producing an informational campaign around common hesitancies and concerns that immigrant and undocumented families have regarding the vaccine, including pregnancy, documentation status, health insurance, and more. Featuring Cyrus Eapen, Anthony Un, Jhanz Marco Garcia, and Darwin Cruz.

About the Organizers

Shaping tomorrow, today, requires path-breaking, creative solutions. In an alarming syndemic of intersecting crises—the coronavirus pandemic, racial injustice and accompanying civil unrest, and cascading environmental hazards—Seize the Moment addresses the grand challenges of the day through transdisciplinary arts, science, technological and humanities collaborations in research, pedagogy and public engagement. Seize the Moment is an initiative of Leonardo, the Humanities Lab and the Global Futures Laboratory at Arizona State University. To learn more, visit our website at http://stm.asu.edu.

The Humanities Lab is an inquiry-driven social change incubator designed to offer students new ways of knowing, doing and being. All Lab courses focus on today’s most pressing social challenges and engage students in team-based, action-oriented, project-centered learning in collaboration with instructional faculty, embedded university librarians and community consultants on and off campus. Learning is activated by students who pose questions, conduct transdisciplinary collaborative research, follow up on research-informed leads, innovate possibilities for positive change and ultimately develop public-facing impact outcomes designed to better our collective future.
