From Humanitarian Act to Human Rights Violation? A Critical History of Transnational Adoptions from East Asia

Transnational, transracial adoptions of children from East Asia to western nations first began from Japan after WWII and expanded dramatically following the Korean War (1950–53).

The record-breaking animated film, KPop Demon Hunters (Netflix, 2025), has been widely discussed in relation to its uplifting narrative of overcoming trauma and finding belonging through an embrace of one’s authentic self. The film has also been interpreted by many reviewers as a critique of the harsh and perfectionist world of the K-pop industry, with a focus on the main character, Rumi, and her bildungsroman journey of individual development.
