View this incredible exhibit, by artist Ellen Murray, brought to the Noble Science and Engineering Library in collaboration with: Opera of Santa Croce, Florence, Italy; National Central Library of Florence; ASU Libraries, ASU Herberger Institute, School of Art and Honorary Sponsorship from the US Consulate, Florence.
As a visual artist and scholar Professor Murray studies threats to the environment and ways to use perception and visual storytelling to help increase public awareness. Her interdisciplinary artistic practice poses important questions related to critical environmental, social, economic, and human issues at the intersection of art, science, and sustainability.
"After the Flood" commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Nov. 4, 1966 flood in Florence, Italy and the overwhelming world response to this enormous natural disaster. The exhibition was organized by artist Ellen Murray and showcases her art installation "Deluge" along with art pieces inspired by materials from the Arno River. The "Deluge" installation premiered at the famous Santa Croce Church and Museum in Florence in conjunction with a previous flood anniversary. At Santa Croce the installation was viewed by over 70 thousand visitors.
It is a privilege for Arizona State University to participate in events marking the 50th flood anniversary. The story of the flood, its aftermath, and the world response to save the city of Florence and its priceless art, is told through Murray’s art and a series of historic photographs showing damage to Santa Croce, the National Central Library, and the city of Florence. Fifty years after the 1966 Florence flood, the exhibition reminds us of the fragile balance between society and nature, and the crucial role people of all nations play in protecting, sustaining, and assuring that our important cities, great artistic accomplishments, and world heritage are never lost.
