"An American Journey Continues" Exhibition
Join us in the gallery for the opening reception of "An American Journey Continues", photograph and digital montage by ASU Professor Stephen Marc. Center for Creative Photography Curator Becky Senf will join Marc to give a gallery talk about the work.
This exhibition celebrates Professor Marc’s 2021 Guggenheim Fellowship as well as the 2021 Independent Publishers gold Award for his book "American / True Colors".
Doors open at 6 p.m., talks begin at 6:30 p.m.
Stephen Marc employs photography as a visual language through which he tells a story of America. At times as a witness, as a historian and seemingly sometimes as a soothsayer, Marc depicts the celebrations, conflicts, milestones and setbacks of a nation of people who continue to negotiate their coexistence in a country with a complex and troubling past.
Who is an American? Marc’s images of people engaged in the public arena visually challenge the dominate-culture’s concept and language. His images represent the people and confront the paradigm that only the descendants of white Europeans are Americans while exposing the qualifier for every other American; be they Native American, African American, Mexican American, Asian American, Arab American and so on. Marc’s images are vital to representing the Americans that live here today at a crucial time in history as we formulate the future of our country and continue the journey toward freedom and democracy in the United States of America.
Gallery hours: Thursday - Saturday, 12 p.m.–5 p.m., and first and thrid Friday receptions, 6 p.m.–9 p.m.
