Common Read — Designing Your Life

Common Read — Designing Your Life

For the 2020–21 academic year, all West campus freshman will be reading “Designing your life” by Dave Evans and Bill Burnett. The book will be distributed the first week of class.

Entering its 12th year, the ASU Common Read is a West campus tradition that connects all incoming first-year students. Students read and create a response to the text over the first part of fall semester, creating a commonality among all incoming ASU West campus students. In November of 2020, students will attend a guest speaker event related to the book. Surrounding this event there will be opportunities to present work that relates to the reading.

This year’s selection, "Designing Your Life" asks a question that never truly goes away: What do I want to be when I grow up? No matter where you are in the journey, the search for a fulfilling life never stops. Dave Evans and Bill Burnett teach audiences how to look at career and life planning through the lens of design. Participants are given the tools to build their way forward and to develop various life scenarios just like a designer tests multiple prototypes. This approach fosters creativity and adaptability and allows audiences to accept that there is never just one right path.

Bill Burnett is an award-winning Silicon Valley designer and the executive director of the renowned design program at Stanford University. He is the co-author of "Designing Your Life", an empowering book that shows people of any age how to design a life in which they can thrive. A thoughtful and motivational speaker, Burnett emphasizes actionable tools in his lectures and workshops.

This event will occur virtually. All 101 students will register in their class. All others can register here to attend.
