Community Conversations: A Look Inside the Scholarship of March Mammal Madness

March Mammal Madness is an annual bracket-based science tournament that reaches hundreds of thousands of students during a month-long science communication extravaganza. The MMM team has also developed an intentional strategy for reaching their target audience, as well as sharing and archiving tournament materials, data and scholarship in partnership with the ASU Library. Join MMM Editor-in-Chief, Dr. Katie Hinde and Scholarly Communication Librarian Anali Maughan Perry, as they explore how their partnership came to be, discuss their dedication to open and equitable access to knowledge, and uncover the method to the Madness.

Anali Maughan Perry is the Head of the Learning Services Division and the Scholarly Communication Librarian at ASU Library. In this role, she oversees the management and operation of the Learning Services Division, which includes the customer service access points of all ASU Library locations, Ask a Librarian, Course Reserve and all library learning spaces. As Scholarly Communication Librarian, she leads efforts to provide outreach and education to the ASU community regarding scholarly publishing and copyright, with particular emphasis on fair use, open access to scholarly information and open education.

Katie Hinde is an Associate Professor in the School of Human Evolution and Social Change and the Center for Evolution and Medicine at Arizona State University. She studies maternal and infant health with a focus on lactation in humans, monkeys and other mammal species. In 2013 she created the March Mammal Madness science outreach campaign and has continued to serve as Editor-in-Chief as it has grown to an incredible team of scientists, illustrators, conservationists, educators, librarians, designers and performers to reach hundreds of thousands of players every year.

This is the third in a series of virtual events featuring a library expert in conversation with community members seeking to gain a deeper understanding of the resources and wide array of services available to them at the ASU Library.
