Crate Digging Culture of Music DJs

College of Integrative Sciences and Arts (CISA) instructor and jazz drummer Michael Pfister moderates this panel discussion focussed on the crate digging culture of disc jockeys and showcases non-traditional research and discovery in the humanities. 

The panel will include:

          David Moroney, aka DJ Mitch Freedom of Hi Dreams Collective

          Byron Pearson, aka Laud Byron Jukebox Sommelier

The panel is related to research Pfister has been doing on DJ culture as a model for inquiry and creativity in the arts and humanities. "What I’m interested in exploring," he said, "is what can DJ’s teach those that do research in an academic setting. I actually use this metaphor in my classes when we talk about academic research."

 Some relevant questions that'll be addressed: 

• What does it mean to be obsessed with a sound? 
• With an idea? 
• How does our research-based practice shape the quality of information we acquire?

The panel will focus on the way research is creatively connected to the process of discovery. In addition, the panelists will discuss the potential for “crate digging” to act as a means of strategically developing ideas and modes of inquiry that can be valuable in the arts and humanities.  

There will be a short DJ set before the performance at Cronkite. 

This event is part of CISA's fall lineup in its Humanities Lecture Series at ASU Downtown Phoenix campus. It also is part of the inaugural ASU Humanities Week.
