Dine in or Take Away
“Dine in or take away?”
It’s a seemingly simple question commonly posed when ordering food or drink in Europe. However, further investigation reveals questions of sustenance, economy, pleasure and consumption. By taking this question as its starting point, the work exhibited examines what it is to a tourist, a guest: to be on the move, yet present in the moment, consuming and responding to the world around us.
"Dine in or take away" is an exhibition highlighting the work produced by Arizona State University undergraduate and graduate students in response to their summer travels in Germany, Italy and Greece. The artists traveled as both artists and viewers in historically rich and contemporarily relevant cities, which were playing host to the art events of the Venice Biennial and Documenta 14. The work in the exhibition ranges from video to painting to performative objects, capturing the essence of ephemerality and permanence inherent in the act of travel.
