'District 9' Film Screening
Twenty-eight years after a giant spaceship with over 1 million malnourished alien appears overJohannesburg, South Africa, the local human population is fed up. District 9, the refugee campwhere the government houses the aliens, has deteriorated into a militarized slum. Humans seethe aliens, who they call “Prawns,” as filthy, violent and a drain on scarce resources. When the government hires a multinational weapons corporation to remove the refugees to a more remote location, an incident occurs that suggests that the border between “Prawn” and human is not as secure as it may seem. Filmed on location in Johannesburg, this science fiction account raises unsettling questions about race, class and the limits of humanity in the context of the camp.
