Ethics@Noon: Engineering Empathy and Ethics

Ethics@Noon: Engineering Empathy and Ethics

Whereas belonging, esteem, and self-actualization have not been ethical priorities for engineering design of the past, future trends and expectations of sustainability and social justice demand a more inclusive, empathic orientation toward such higher order human needs. Professors Thomas P. Seager and Margaret Hinrichs propose a pluralistic interpretation of empathy grounded in an understanding of three parts of the mind: cognitive, affective, and conative. This presentation will examine and contrast engineering case studies through the lenses of empathy and the NSPE Code of Ethics for Engineers.

Ethics @ Noon is open to students, faculty and the general public. Attendees are encouraged to bring their lunch and their curiosity.
