In ASU Durham Hall Room 240 and on Zoom at https://asu.zoom.us/webinar/88354817248

Homeward: The feature debut of Ukrainian director Nariman Aliev, this family drama is set during the 2014 period of the Russo-Ukrainian war. Centered on the efforts of a family to bury a son who was killed in the war according to the traditions of Crimean Tatars--a Muslim minority from the Ukrainian region occupied by Russia since 2014 — it is a well-acted and confidently crafted exploration of the historical and contemporary traumas of exile and loss.

Nariman Aliev is a Ukrainian director and screenwriter of Crimean Tatar origin. A graduate of the Kyiv National University, he is a member of the European Film Academy and the Ukrainian Film Academy. He has received the title of the Honored Artist of Ukraine for outstanding achievement in the performing arts. Homeward, Aliev’s debut feature, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section and won multiple awards, including Best Film by the Ukrainian Film Critics’ association, Ukrainian Film Academy and film festivals of Odessa, Bucharest and Istanbul. The Ukrainian Oscar Committee selected Homeward as Ukraine’s national nominee for the Academy Award for Best International Film.
