Humanities Hacks

Nicole Anderson, director, and Ron Broglio, associate director of the IHR give their advice on surviving the first semester at university and living the college lifestyle as habits for learning and for life.

To note, this event will take place as a hybrid event at Ross-Blakley Hall 196 and online via Zoom.

About the speakers:

Nicole Anderson is professor and director of The Institute for Humanities Research at Arizona State University. Prior to this role, she was in extensive leadership positions at Macquarie University, first as associate dean, then as head/director of the School of Media, Communications, Creative Arts, Language and Literature. She is currently honorary professor at Macquarie University, Sydney, and Professor Honoris Causa for the International Institute for Hermeneutics at Warsaw University, Poland.

As the director of the IHR, she aims to support research performance by developing opportunities through seed funding and fellowship schemes, and raising the profile and public engagement with the institute through a focused digital engagement strategy and high profile academic and industry public talks.

In addition to her leadership experience, she has published extensively in the areas of animal studies, ethics, cultural studies, biopolitics, poststructuralism and posthumanism, all of which have been informed also by her scholarship on French philosopher Jacques Derrida and Derridean deconstruction. She is the founding editor of the Derrida Today Journal (based on the work of Jacques Derrida), published by Edinburgh University Press, and which has been running since 2007. Aligned with the journal is the Derrida Today International Conferences (derridatoday.com.au), of which Anderson is the founding executive director. The conferences have been held in USA, UK, Europe and Australia, and provides a forum for academics from around the world to discuss and apply the thinking of Derrida to contemporary world events and issues.

Ron Broglio writes books and essays on nonhuman phenomenology and animal studies. He curates and produces contemporary environmental art exhibitions and environmental experiences. Ron is the Desert Humanities initiative lead and associate director of the Institute for Humanities Research at Arizona State University. He is the author, most recently, of "Animal Revolution" (University of Minnesota Press, 2022).
