The People's Playground

The People's Playground with Bob Galloway and Dean Terasaki

The People's Playground features the photographs of Bob Galloway and Dean Terasaki who earned their MFA degrees in photography from Arizona State University and ran photography programs in the Maricopa County Community Colleges for three decades.

The exhibition is part of a series that will feature ASU alumni and faculty in the lead up to the 50th Anniversary of Northlight Gallery in 2022.

Galloway and Terasaki explore the creative expressions of people from dynamic subcultures and the fringes of society.

Galloway travels the desert southwest looking for sites erected by anonymous artists or religious zealots creating outsider sanctuaries and open-air galleries painstakingly curated by devoted collectors of human detritus. Terasaki engages with the cosplay community. Dressing up as one of their own, he sets up his steampunk-style view camera at events to entice participants to perform their characters in front of his lens. Making a single 4x5 negative during the sitting, he will then process and scan the fill to make large digital prints of their magnificent persona.

The artists will give gallery talks at 6:20, 7:20 and 8:20 p.m. on third Friday, February 19. Masks and social distancing will be observed in the gallery with limited capacity. If you would like to dress for the event, please wear a creative mask or come in full costume. You will fit right in!

Open gallery hours are Thursday-Saturday, noon to 5 p.m. through Saturday, Feb 20.
