Turning Light into Meaning: Color in Art and Astronomy

Students in Professor Ellen Meissinger’s Color and Sustainable Practice class (ART 494) collaborated with ASU professor and astrophysicist, Patrick Young, to communicate science through color. Scientists almost never take colored pictures about space. The color is added later. Starting with black and white images, students selected colors to convey scientific information or imaginative/aesthetic content using imagery from the Hubble Space Telescope.

Come and see their amazing color solutions as they describe space with color.
