American Indian Students and Higher Education Residency in Arizona, Utah and New Mexico: A Personal History

Join the Labriola National American Indian Data Center for a talk about American Indians and the impact of in-state tuition waivers for universities.

Robert Chiago has years of experience working to expand access to higher education for American Indian students in the Southwest. In this presentation, we will discuss his personal experiences and how they relate to the legislative history of in-state tuition waivers for universities in Arizona, Utah and New Mexico. We will also consider how these waivers impacted later expansions in access in the form of full-tuition waivers or scholarships of qualifying American Indian students. Finally, we explore what lessons this history offers for current efforts to further increase educational access for American Indian students.
