ASU Cares Project - Utah Alumni Chapter

Event description

  • Community service

It has been estimated that only two percent of students at Mountain View Elementary School have parents who attended college. To encourage the possibility for students who may not hear or have such discussions at home each class has a collegiate nickname. One fifth grade class is identified as ASU. Our chapter works with that class in three ways each spring. The first is an Introduction to Journalism class which culminates with the students breaking up into groups of two. They interview each other and write stories about their future college plans. We take the stories and create a small newspaper featuring all the coverage. It’s printed and distributed to the students to keep. This happens in March.

The second activity is a panel discussion at which a group of alumni describe ASU and answer all questions the fifth graders have about college; this happens in April.

The activities conclude in May with an end of the school year pizza party before they head off to middle school in the fall!
