Join ASU professor Rafael Martinez Orozco for this lunchtime talk at the Chandler Museum, offering a  behind-the-scenes look at his community-focused oral history project, The Making of Querencia in Chandler, which is on exhibit at the museum through Oct. 15, 2023.

Martinez, who is Southwest Borderlands assistant professor in the College of Integrative Sciences and Arts' School of Applied Sciences and Arts at ASU Polytechnic campus, will share his experiences over the last year of interviewing and recording oral histories of long-time residents in Chandler, Arizona’s historic barrios as well as of members of recent migrant communities.

Querencia refers to and explores the process in which community creates a sense of place and belonging. A variety of voices share experiences from the city’s founding days to its current growth and development. Residents speak about struggle and segregation, but also love for their neighborhood—founded on community and connection.

Read or listen to the full oral history interviews on this Chandlerpedia site for the project.
