  • Campus life
  • Free
  • Professional and career development

The Unit for Data Science and Analytics at ASU Library is excited to announce the return of its Volunteer Open Projects for Fall 2025. This semester, students can choose from two Open Projects that address real-world challenges. These projects offer opportunities to collaborate, learn and expand your skills in data science and analytics, regardless of discipline or experience level.

This 60-minute kickoff session is open to all currently enrolled Arizona State University students who are interested in exploring data science and analytics through hands-on collaboration. The session will be offered both in person and remotely. Registration is required.

Project Launch details:

  • Friday, September 5, 2025, from 10 to 11 a.m.
  • Registration is required.
  • In-person (ASU, Hayden Library, 3rd floor Research Commons)
  • Please register using your ASU email.
  • Time is based on Arizona time.
  • Subsequent weekly Friday project meetings will be scheduled.

What you will learn:

  • Real-world healthcare data experience
  • Practical skills in data science, machine learning and model interpretability
  • Work alongside a supportive team that will guide you from start to finish.

Project 1: Predicting Hospital Readmissions for Patients with Type 2 Diabetes

Join us for a hands-on, data-driven project where you’ll work with real hospital records to solve a critical health care challenge: predicting 30-day hospital readmissions for patients with Type 2 diabetes. This dataset includes more than 100,000 patient encounters from 130 U.S. hospitals over a 10-year period, offering a valuable opportunity to analyze real-world patterns in patient care, medication and lab results.

Your goal will be to build a predictive model that helps hospitals identify at-risk patients and reduce preventable, costly readmissions. You will have the opportunity to choose your focus area.

Choose Your Path:

  • Track 1: Exploratory Data Analysis
  • Track 2: Statistical Modeling
  • Track 3: Predictive Modeling and Machine Learning
  • Track 4: Model Interpretability and Explainability
  • Track 5: Unsupervised Learning and Anomaly Detection

Project 2: Displaced Voices: Using Data Science Tools for Housing Justice

Arizona has one of the highest eviction rates in the nation, with low-income and marginalized communities disproportionately affected. In 2024 alone, nearly 90,000 eviction notices were filed in Maricopa County, underscoring a growing housing crisis.

This hands-on project empowers you to turn data into action. You’ll work with U.S. Census data and Maricopa County public records to investigate housing insecurity and develop the technical skills needed to help address real-world social equity challenges.

Choose Your Path:

  • Data Visualization Team: Create visuals that make complex data accessible and actionable for the public.
  • Statistical Analysis Team: Analyze factors linked to evictions and uncover underlying causes.
  • Predictive Modeling Team: Build models to forecast eviction trends and identify communities at risk.
