BUT DON’T BELIEVE THEM: A documentary about Black Lives Matter - A Creative Horizons Series Event

Event description

  • Diversity and inclusion
  • Open to the public

This 23-minute docu-concert is an artist’s statement from Mark G. Meadows; a black bicultural jazz musician speaking about the Black Lives Matter movement. Mark teamed up with Michael Ivan Schwarts to produce this docu-concert and to screen it for American and Russian University audiences. The film shares Mark’s journey as he communicates through interviews and musical performances his effort to awaken people to the need for equality for black people living in America. As part of the event, Mark and Michael show parts of their zoom calls with Russian University students, who were able to ask them about the Black Lives Matter movement.

Following the screening and discussion. Mark Meadows will perform some of his original pieces from the film.

The question this event seeks to address:

What is the Black Lives Matter Movement and how is it understood/ perceived by Russians and other members of the post-Soviet states?
