An Evening of Poetry Featuring Azad Sharma

Poet Azad Ashim Sharma introduces his newest poetry collection, "Boiled Owls," which "delves into the kaleidoscopic terrain of cocaine addiction to explore the strain it puts on his speaker’s interior, as well as family and those in close proximity," notes publisher Nightboat Books.   

Sharma will be joined by poets Jacqueline Balderrama, clinical assistant professor of English and creative writing, and Cecilia Savala, graduate student and teaching assistant in creative writing, in conversation with Hayden's Ferry Review editor Susan Nguyen, all of the Department of English in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Azad Ashim Sharma is a writer and publisher based in South London. He is the director of the87press publishing collective. His work includes "Against the Frame" and "Ergastulum" (Broken Sleep Books, 2022). His work has been featured in publications such as the Asian American Writers Workshop, Stand Magazine, Gutter Magazine, the journal Social and Health Sciences, SPAMzine, MIR Online and Wasafiri.  Sharma is a Chase-funded doctoral candidate in English and humanities at Birkbeck College, University of London, and was the recipient of the Caribbean Philosophical Association’s Nicolás Cristóbal Guillén Batista Outstanding Book Award for 2023. 

On Wednesday, March 27, CISA's School of Applied Sciences and Arts will host a "meet the poet" event with Azad Sharma at ASU Polytechnic campus, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., in Peralta Hall, Room 313.

Azad Sharma's visit and these events are sponsored by ASU's School of Applied Sciences and Arts in the College of Integrative Sciences and Arts, the Department of English in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and the Humanities Institute.
