Join us for the release of Fly: The Big Book of Basketball Fashion by Mitchell S. Jackson. As he explains “Fly is a book for people who love basketball and the NBA, for people who love fashion, for those who care about what shapes America.” The sumptuous, colorful book celebrates NBA fashion and the decades of cultural and political phenomena that bring it into being. Author Mitchell S. Jackson will be in conversation with renowned veteran NBA reporter Marc J. Spears.

Bios

Mitchell S. Jackson is the winner of the 2021 Pulitzer Prize in Feature Writing and the 2021 National Magazine Award in Feature Writing. He is the John O. Whiteman Dean’s Distinguished Professor at Arizona State University. Jackson’s honors include fellowships and awards from John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, Creative Capital, the New York Public Library’s Cullman Center, the Lannan Foundation, the Ford Foundation, PEN America, TED, the New York Foundation for the Arts, and the Center for Fiction. His writing has been featured on This American Life, on the cover of the New York Times Book Review, Time Magazine, Esquire Magazine, and Marie Claire Magazine, as well as in The New Yorker, The New York Times, Harper’s Magazine, Harper’s Bazaar Magazine, The Paris Review, The Washington Post Magazine, The Guardian and elsewhere.

Marc J. Spears received the 2023 Gowdy Media Award for his veteran reporting. He works with ESPN as senior NBA writer for Andscape, a Black media platform dedicated to creating, highlighting and uplifting the diverse stories of Black identity. At Andscape, Spears regularly breaks NBA news and writes notable long-form work. Spears has covered the NBA for more than two decades, including more than 18 NBA All-Star Games as well as 18 NBA Finals.
