'Hommage de Jules Massenet: Confluence of Art Forms' Exhibit

Jules Massenet was the leading French opera composer from the latter part of the 19th century into the first decade of the 20th century. His 24 operas represent a diverse palette of thematic material including works based on historical, mythological, religious, fictional and magical settings. Massenet's affinity for art forms beyond music such as dance, prose and visual arts is readily apparent in many of these masterful scores.   

The current exhibit displays ten first-edition opera scores by Massenet, most of which are signed. It features inscriptions to Célestine Galli-Marié (the first Carmen) as well as to the prima ballerina Carlotta Zambelli (the foremost Italian ballerina at the beginning of the 20th-century). Also featured is an original watercolor template by the artist Haber-Dys which was used by Heugel for the publication of Massenet’s opera Sapho and several rare deluxe editions as well as whimsical musical quotations. All scores are from the private collection of Dr. Robert Mills. 

This exhibit will be on display in the Music Library from Aug. 15 until Dec. 15.
