Integrating Artificial Intelligence into Academic Research Responsibly

Event description

  • Professional and career development

Presented by the Unit for Data Science and Analytics at ASU Library, the Artificial Intelligence for Academic Research open lab will support researchers in understanding how AI tools can be used to assist research workflows across disciplines while maintaining academic rigor and scholarly judgment.

Rather than positioning AI as a replacement for expertise, the session will explore AI as a support mechanism and augmentation for specific research tasks. Participants will explore how AI can be integrated into selected stages of the research process, including identifying relevant literature, summarizing complex texts, organizing research notes, and supporting qualitative research through large language models. Ethical and responsible use will be central to the session. Participants will examine issues related to transparency, proper attribution, and alignment with institutional and publisher policies on AI use in research.

The open lab will also address well-documented limitations of AI tools, including hallucinations and biased outputs, and the implications of these limitations for scholarly work. By the end of the session, participants will be better positioned to make informed, critical decisions about when AI tools may be appropriate and when they are not within their own research practices.
