Nationalism and the Macro-Micro Link: A Keynote Address by Stathis Kalyvas

About the Talk: In this talk, Stathis Kalyvas revisits Michael Hechter’s seminal work on nationalism and the search for its microfoundations. He assesses it in light of recent methodological developments in the social sciences, most notably the microdynamics turn, but also the “credibility revolution,” the advent of big data, and the specter of AI. He asks how (and also whether) we have reached a more profound and/or effective understanding of nationalism and reflects on the way ahead.

About the Speaker: Stathis N. Kalyvas is Gladstone Professor of Government and fellow of All Souls College at Oxford, where he also founded and directs the T. E. Lawrence Program on Conflict and Violence. He is an award-winning author of over 50 scholarly articles in five languages and multiple books, including “The Rise of Christian Democracy in Europe” (1996), “The Logic of Violence in Civil War” (2006), “Order, Conflict, and Violence” (2008) and the “Oxford Handbook on Terrorism” (2019). His research—which focuses on global trends in political violence—cuts across the fields of international relations, comparative politics, sociology, and history, and has been supported by the Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation, the United States Institute of Peace, the Guggenheim Foundation, and others. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2008 and the British Academy in 2020.

This event is part of the School of Politics and Global Studies’ Kopf Conference series, with additional support from the President’s Office.
