Event description

  • Campus life
  • Open to the public

“Notes on Viardot” is a kind of jukebox opera that looks back at the life of one of the 19th century's most famous opera divas, Pauline Viardot (1821-1910). Characters such as Georges Sand, Charles Dickens, Clara Schumann, and Camille Saint-Saens make their appearance, along with the love of her life, the great Russian writer Ivan Turgenev. Much of the opera is told through the music she sang, including Mozart, Gluck, Rossini, Donizetti, Bellini and many of her own compositions. “Notes on Viardot” is part of the effort to make Viardot's life and compositions better known to 21st century performers and audiences. The opera is by Michael Ching, whose opera “Speed Dating Tonight!” has had over 130 productions since 2013, including ASU’s virtual production in 2021.

Music and libretto by Michael Ching; stage direction by Stephanie Sadownik; music direction by Michael Shannon.

Content Warning: Suitable for all audiences.

Presented by arrangement with the composer and librettist.
