Panel: What are the Human Sciences?

In this session, we will think together about the role of the humanities and define the human sciences, in the context of its use at the Julie Ann Wrigley Global Futures Laboratory and international sustainability sciences and educational platforms. Panelists will also explore how emergent research on environments and technology is re-imagining the question of the human in the wake of planetary crisis and ecological precarity.

Featuring guest panelist Bernard Dionysius Geoghegan (King's College London) in conversation with representatives from the Global Futures Laboratory at ASU: human economies focal lead Adam Nocek, human sciences researchers Christopher Jones and Serena Ferrando and postdoctoral fellow Carrie Karsgaard, this roundtable will explore the increasingly indeterminate boundaries between the technological, biological and social forces that structure our relationships to environmental crises.

The panel will be moderated by Joni Adamson, President's Professor of environmental humanities in the Department of English and director of the Environmental Humanities Initiative (EHI) at the Julie Ann Wrigley Global Institute of Sustainability at ASU, and Lisa Yin Han, assistant professor of film and media studies and senior global futures scientist, Julie Ann Wrigley Global Futures Laboratory.

This panel is the culmination of Bernard Dionysius Geoghegan's visit to ASU. Geoghegan will also give a public talk on Jan. 25: "Whither the Human? Computing and Indigenous Knowledge Against the Inhuman Sciences."
